I was running my system fine in my cosair 650d until yesterday, when i got a new coolermaster HAF XB case. I uninstalled everything from my 650 and put it in the new case. Now it won't post. i have the same problem as described in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/328881-31-boot-mobo-standby-lights-fans-beeps
The fans "wiggle" when the power button is pressed (motherboard power button AND case power button), then nothing. All following attempts at starting up won't even cause the fans to wriggle anymore. On the second attempt, i smelled something burn inside the case.
Now i have everything taken out in a breadboard set up, (CPU, CPU heatsink, mobo, psu, RAM), and still nothing will start. The LEDs on the motherboard light up...so i suppose the PSU is fine?
Keep in mind that all these parts were running fine a few days ago, and have been for the past year or so. Help please!

Where is the burnt smell coming from?

Smell the back of the psu, if it's that, it's fried. You can also look at the mobo for burnt chips, blown capacitors, etc.

If you didn't mount the mobo correctly on the standoffs it probably shorted out on the case.

i ripped the standoffs from my old corsair case cuz i had lost the cooler master ones, i put them in alrite, but some didn't screw in all the way. I didn't think that would've been a problem, could that have shorted the mobo? i looked all over my mobo, nothing looks destroyed. If the PSU fried, how would the lights still power on?

well, i unplugged, replugged, wedged it in. did it to both CPU and the mob's 24 pin several times. I suppose thats what u mean by "check"? I did try jumping the PSU, and it won't start, however, the jump attempt was done with a questionable conductor so...(i don't have a paperclip)

Then you probably shorted the mobo on the case. Maybe an extra or incorrectly placed standoff? You need one standoff for each mounting hole in the mobo, if there's an extra under there or it's in the wrong place....ZAP.

but i had installed the standoffs, one for each mounting hole, and no extra standoffs...i just didn't screw some of the standoffs all the way in (some of them were pretty stubborn, so i just left them halfway screwed in). Is there a way for me to confirm that the mobo has been burnt? Since nothing does look burnt...

Borrowed a PSU today, same wattage as my old one (1k) plugged it in, and same problem. Motherboard standby lights come on, but when the power button is pressed, nothing. So by this i can assume that something is wrong with the mobo?
