I am having issues with a system upgrade and believe it is my motherboard. Basically I kept all of my drives, PSU, and case and upgraded the rest.

Main System Components:

  • ■ New - ASRock Z87 Extereme 6 motherboard
    ■ New - Intel i5 4670
    ■ New – 1 stick of 8 gig Crucial Memory
    ■ New – Powercolor 7870 Graphics Card
    ■ Old - OCZ Vertex 2 60 gig
    ■ Old - Samsung 1 terabyte HD
    ■ Old - 650 watt PSU
Issues
After assembling the system occasionally when accessing the BIOS, the OCZ drive wasn’t showing up in the BIOS under storage devices. I checked the Sata/power cables, rebooted and it would show up sometimes. So during the Windows 7 install, sometimes after a reboot the Flash drive wasn’t there and the system was looking to the storage drive to boot. I have no idea why the Flash drive kept disappearing. Sometimes it was recognized under storage devices, but the Samsung was listed as the boot device (a change I didn’t make).

At this point I took the mobo out and checked everything. The CPU fan was loose on one peg so I fixed that and everything seemed to work fine. I installed Windows, installed the mobo drivers and utilities, and installed Windows updates. Once that was all set, I installed the graphics card and driver. The rest of the day it worked fine, I was gaming on my new rig.

Sunday morning I boot up, and I got some type of error that said it was possibly due to new hardware and it wanted me to repair Windows. I had this error a lot after the Windows install, for example after adding new hardware like a USB dongle for my XBOX controller. Usually I would just ignore it and boot Windows normally.

The problem though is that as of Sunday morning, the mobo doesn’t recognize my keyboard or mouse, so I can’t do anything. I believe they are USB 2.0 devices. I tried them in the two USB 2.0 slots on the mobo, the two USB 2.0 slots on my case (where they were previously working), and in the USB 3.0 slots. When I first plug in the keyboard, the LED flases green for a split second, but it doesn’t stay on.

What do you guys think? Should I exchange the mobo? Could it be something else? What should I do?

what is the PSU? old psu can cause strange issues with motherboards. I also thought that the new haswell's need special powersuplies.

"According to Intel's presentation at IDF, the new Haswell processors enter a sleep state called C7 that can drop processor power usage as low as 0.05A. Even if the sleeping CPU is the only load on the +12V rail, most power supplies can handle a load this low. The potential problem comes up when there is still a substantial load on the power supply's non-primary rails (the +3.3V and +5V). If the load on these non-primary rails are above a certain threshold (which varies by PSU), the +12V can go out of spec (voltages greater than +12.6V). If the +12V is out of spec when the motherboard comes out of the sleep state, the PSU's protection may prevent the PSU from running and will cause the power supply to "latch off". This will require the user to cycle the power on their power supply using the power switch on the back of the unit." Quoted from techreport.com

PSU is a possible, timings may be off in the DRAM, might try booting into SAFE MODE - i.e. turn on and start tapping the F8 key as it boots, if it goes ahead and boots into safe mode then it's prob the OS and may just want to reinstall Win and when you do make sure you do all the Win updates (if 7, it takes forever)

Have you unplugged all the USB devices and started with just the keyboard??. Did you check your USB ports for bent pins or missing pin???
Have you tried another keyboard or cleared the CMOS to see if the ports come back and then make sure the mb bios is updated and the Ssd firmware.

I am not sure how to check the PSU rail issues, but the PSU is Antec TruePower New TP-750 Blue and information can be found at the link:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371022

I can't boot into safemode or check the DRAM because I can't use the keyboard to get into the BIOS.

Yes, I tried using just the keyboard in all of the different USB ports.

So far, recommendations I can do tonight include:

  • ■ Check USBs for bent/missing pins.
    ■ Clear the CMOS
    ■ Update SSD firmware using old components
    ■ Update the BIOS if I can

Thanks guys. I will keep you posted.

Ok, I reset the BIOS and the USB works again. I disabled legacy support, which was a mistake I made.

I tried to update the firmware on the SSD but it freezes halfway through. The SSD is still disappearing in the BIOS too. I ordered a new SSD to try that out. If that doesn't work out then I guess the iss is the MB.
