AMD vs NVIDIA

I suggest picking up the AMD 7970 for two reasons, firstly the PS4 and Xbox One are based on the same graphics architecture called GCN and future games will be developed with GCN as a priority (since the consoles have GCN) and so future games will run great on the 7970, here is the link. Secondly the HD 7970 comes with the Never Settle bundle which has 4 nice games for free (Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider and Crysis 3 I think).

What do you consider high resolution? The 7970 =~ GTX 680...the GTX 770 is just a little faster than the 680 so they are comparable. If your doing 1920X1080 than a 7970 is a good choice, its at a great price with the free games and awesome performance.

If high resolution to you is 2560X1440 and up then I would recommend nvidia because I would push for a multiple GPU system to game on ultra at the resolution and nvidia has better drivers for multiple graphics cards.

I don't know in those terms, but Battlefield and Crysis in high-ultra.

Why would you put THIS as the title...
Anyways, the equivalent is the GTX 770, but you can't really say which is better. It comes down to what kind of games you play, and that too they will only be marginally better.
NVidia: Cod, Battlefield, Runescape (would you believe that), Borderlands, that kind of stuff, Metro, DiRT
AMD: Crysis, Civilizations V, Skyrim, DirectX 11

Basically, NVidia cards are better for fast, calculative tasks, whilst AMD cards are better for heavier duty.

Lol, I'm going to be playing Battlefield and Crysis. Isn't Battlefield partnered with AMD though? Apparently AMD said that Battlefield is optimized for their GPU (especially BF4 which I intend to get). Especially since the next-gen consoles will be running AMD as well.

That's kind of a difficult question. I'm talking hypothetical, for a desktop build. I won't be getting a new monitor right away. Instead I'll be temporarily using my 1440 x 900 monitor. Once I have the money I'll be changing to the 1920 x 1080 monitor that I intend to use.

Not really. The 770 uses less power, it has a greater texel and pixal rate, a higher core speed and a higher memory speed. However, the 7970 has 3GB of GDDR5 memory whilst the 770 has 2GB of GDDR5, a 384-bit bus width and a higher bandwidth. So it seems that the 770 seems to just out-do the 7970

Actaully the GTX 770 does provide a higher pixel and texture rate.
That is because it's clocked higher.
Both of these cards however max out at around the same frequiencies, so in the end the AMD card does tend to have an advantage due to the 384 buss. But don't quote me on this since we rarely see the GTX 770 being memory limited.

Tomb raider is one such example.

for 1920x1080 though, unless you plan on overclocking, plan to play the games included in the AMD bundle, or you can find a good deal on the 7970, there is no reason to go for it.
At stock, the GTX 770 dominates. (at 1920x1080 and lower)
It is faster, and produces less heat.

Anyway, if I had to make the purchase, I'd go for this card right here.

By the way we have already seen HD 7990 tests using the driver that fixes crossfire.
It's just as good as SLI.
So if you can wait 6 days, then dual HD 7970's will work just as well as two GTX 770's.

I can't speak for BF4, but I'm quoting stats from http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=660 .
Basically, here's what I'd recommend. If you plan on OC, get the 7850. Apparently it can OC a crazy amount, whilst the 660 can only OC 6% :) If you don't wanna OC, get 660
