27 or 24in gaming monitor recommendation needed (preferably not 1080)

Current monitors: two old 1600x1200 dell 2001fp

I want to add a good gaming monitor to use with this system. Would prefer 27in. Will be using this monitor in a three or four monitor setup. But only need to game on the one monitor (will also surf and watch movies on the monitor). I really don't like 1080 but if its by far the best for gaming I'd buy it reluctantly. I really like having more vertical pixels.

I'm willing to spend up to maybe $700 but want good value for the money (ie dont want to pay 50pct more for a 10pct better monitor). Also I'd like to add a second identical monitor in the future if that's possible in the future with this system ( again only want to game on one of the monitors).

Well, the first step up would be a 24 inch 1920X1200 display. Probably not enough better for you.

The second step would be a 27 incch 1920X1080 display, but I wouldn't recommend it. You can see the pixels and the letters will always be a bit jagged.

The sweet spot at your budget would be 27 inch 2650X1440 display.

Here's a selection of them. You graphics card would be stressed by the large number of pixels. I'd wait until AMD fixed its CF drivers before buying another one though.

Ok that's cool info man thanks!

But I'm really looking for specific monitor recommendations like you should get xyz monitor because its 1920x1200 with a 1ms response time or whatever vs zyx monitor that's 2560x1440 because the response time is way slower.

Thats just a random example. I don't really know what specifications I should be looking for that's why I'm looking for a specific monitor to buy.

Now that's tougher. Some people really like the fast monitors at 120Hz, others don't. I think it depends on how quick you are. Do you have real quick reflexes? Personally, I don't and I seem to be less sensitive to slow displays. Others are driven batty by 30FPS games. The one and two ms response monitors are probably a waste to the vast majority, if not all people. It seems 5ms is plenty fast. I have a 6ms monitor with no speed issues at all. I happen to have a Dell U3014 at work and a Dell U3011 at home. Both monitors are fantastic with 30 inches of 2560X1600 resolution. But they cost about $1200 and up.

This is a 5ms display and seems to have pretty good review and is but $600. I, of course, am a Dell fan and would go with a:

In short, that $600 is probably your best buy.
