This one is driving me crazy. I built my own gaming system a few months back, has been working beautifully. Basic specs:
Processor: Intel Core i5-3570
PSU: Corsair 650W TX650
Memory: 8GB Corsair Vengenace (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: Gigabye GTX 670 Windforce PCIE 3.0x16 w/2048MB onboard
Motherboard: Gigabyte Intel Z77 GA-Z77X-D3H
Hard Drive: OCZ 256GB SSD
Everything is running stock, I've never done any overclocking.
For some reason a couple of weeks ago I have started to get crashes. First time was with Borderlands 2, then it occurred with Bulletstorm, Assassin's Creed 2, now Skyrim. The problem does NOT seem to be game specific, and it never seems to occur when using my machine for anything else.
The screen basically goes black, my monitor LED goes orange like its no longer getting a signal. CPU tower stays on, and the fans suddenly kick on higher gear. I usually have to hard reset the machine. In some cases when it comes on, Windows provides with a dmp file. I used a little program called BlueScreenView, and it indicates Bug Check Code 0x00000116 and that the crash was caused by dxgkrnl.sys. You can see the dmp file here:

The timing seems very random. Sometimes I can go for hours with no problem. Then it will crash, I reboot, restart the game, and the crash will typically happen much faster (within minutes).
I completely removed all nVidia drivers (even went into the registry to clean them out), downloaded the latest, and clean installed them. I only installed nvidia driver and physx, not any of the extra junk. It didn't seem to make a difference.
I ran FurMark for an hour, couldn't cause a crash. GPU temperatures got around 65C and were stable during that test. During regular gaming GPU temps seem much lower.
I really don't think it's a heat problem, I have really good cooling and a large case. I have run CPU monitoring and all temps seem to hover in the 40-50C range. Prior to a few weeks ago I could play Crysis for hours and never once had a problme.
Last night it occurred playing Skyrim. I downloaded OCCT. Found no CPU or memory issues with it, but when I ran the GPU3D test it crashed instantly. This occurred several times in a row, so I thought at least I could reproduce the problem at will. Well I came back an hour later, tried GPU3D, and the test ran flawlessly for an hour with no errors.
I did run Memtest, though only for a couple of errors. Didn't get any errors. Maybe I need to run it all night.
Any ideas? I'm not even sure if it's a hardware or software issue at this point. Maybe it's the power supply? I would think 650W would be plenty, and I tried to get a good brand...
