How to tell if HDD is bad?

Ok, I've been trying to install Win7 with no luck. I think I have a bad HDD. I want to take it to a friends and plug into their machine which already has an OS.
How to I go about running diagnostics on this HDD.

thats western digital's diagnostic tool. you can download it and run the tool. it should tell you if there are bad sectors, etc.

which test should tell me the quickest? I don't really wan't to be there for several hours as the extended test says.

there may be a quick test. itll catch the more obvious problems, but the extended will catch most if not all of it. you might want to just leave it overnight or something.

i have to ask this though, what problem were you having when you were trying to install windows 7?

Cannotwrite to partition error 0x80070057 .... I tried deleteing all partitions, made a new partition, tried formatting. still got the same error.

is this a brand new drive?

Yes. About a week old. I think the Manufacture date is June also. Never had an OS on it. I tried AHCI, RAID, IDE modes in the BIOS all came up with the same error.

well if i were you id either return it to the place you bought it from or directly to western digital.
