I am debating between an i7 3820 or a i7 4770k. I already own an ASUS Rampage IV extreme motherboard. My friend RMA'd his and they accidentally sent him back 2 so he gave one to me. All I can really afford is a 3820 and upgrading to a 3990k down the road seems unlikely because Im trying to upgrade my video card. Should I purchase a 3820 or sell the motherboard and get the 4770k with a Z87 board?

I will mostly be using this computer for gaming.

It would be cheaper to stick with the 3820. You don't have to worry about buying another motherboard. But for gaming, I would recommend the Intel Core i5-3570K instead. It offers everything that the i7 does minus the Hyper-Threading. And only a select few games support Hyper-Threading at this time.

And the CPU that I recommend is also overclockable. Have you decided upon your other components?

I actually already own the i5-3570k with an AsRock Extreme4 motherboard. I just thought that upgrading would be helpful especially with the Rampage IV extreme quad channel ram and overall quality. I already have a Corsair 750 watt PSU, 16 Gb of 1600 ram and a GTX 580 while I wait to purchase a 780.

Socket 2011 is actually the only architecture out in Intel right now that does have a solid upgrade path. Socket 1150 is on shaky ground, likely only seeing a 4th Gen refresh next summer. Broadwell is looking more and more to be BGA only as Intel hasn't silenced the rumors. That means that the next socketed architecture after 4th gen will be 6th Gen in 2016...if it isn't BGA only too.

Stick with the 3820 now that it is down to $199 *at microcenter it is the same price as the newer 4670k but with more performance and the capability to upgrade to broadwell-E processor later assuming that intel is still using 2011 socket. Plus you are not finding an i7 anywhere for under $250.

The 3820 also has better overclocking scores than the i5 family
