I get fluctuating ping in games even though whenever i do a speed-test the ping is fine(most of the time)

I get it in all games, whether it be lol, planetside 2, blacklight retibution, dota 2.

I am on a wired connection.

http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=1251919&highlight=benedrix

Im called benedrix in this post and theres a cmd test thing there if thats useful.

Why does this happen? Could it be my anti virus?(I use:avast, malware anti malware bytes, microsoft secruity essentials)

There is also another problem for some reason all computers, devices except mine get 4mb/s down but mine gets 1.5mb/s . I just don't understand. Should i try moving my computer somewhere else?

So ping or latency is a measurement of the amount of time it takes to get a message to a device and get a response from it. reason it can go up are either device is under load and cannot respond immediately

for instance 5 people join your game and your computer must load models and textures off the hard drive to draw them on your screen or you have a network issue that is causing packets to have to be error corrected upon arrival and the processing for that is taking extra time, as well as a few other things, like the hosting server starts maintenance, an anti virus starts a scan, someone starts a bandwidth hogging app on your local network in your home like streaming a super HD netflix movie and you do not have a router that managed connections properly [most residential routers do not do this], etc.. It could be a lot of things in the end.

So if my brother is watching a stream on twitch at 720p is he taking all the bandwidth so i dont get any? What about my internet being slower than the other devices in my house? My router doesnt seem to manage it well because i get fluctuating ping, maybe its not managing the bandwidth well. Also this shouldn't happen since my ISP prioritizes games for a good ping but it still doesnt work. My router is a technicolour 582 btw. So how do i try to solve the problem? I will be doing a fresh install with windows 8 in a new ssd soon so maybe that will help. And were upgrading to adsl2 as well.

Assuming that is the issue, the easiest test is play after blocking your brother for a few days and see if the issue goes away or not, you need to buy a more expensive router that can manage the bandwidth between connections and guarantee you the needed amount for the game at all time,s these are generally commercial class routers and none too cheap for a household though.

You can try a QOS [Quality of Service] residential router but there is something not there for them, cannot recall what it is now, but that is pretty much what you face. You can of course pay for your own separate internet and just use it by yourself, but that costs money.

A trace route should help narrow down the offending hop.

can do a "tracert www.google.com" to get a quick snapshot, but a better longer-running one would be to "pathping www.google.com"

You can replace google with whatever IP/DNS of the server you're attempting to hit.

Post those results.

Side note: Posting a trace-route of pathping will show IP address of local networks, so you may want to replace any names or address of the first 2-4 hops. Pretty much anything that indicated your ISP or city. Make sure those entries are included, just not with the addresses, we need to see the results.
