Bad Wireless Connectivity

There will be two parts to my problem so if you could analyze both issues and fix both, that would be great.

1. My friend has a pretty good internet connection overall. I have known others who use the same provider and such and receive good wireless connection. His parents and directly connected to the router but he uses a wireless internet connection for his desktop (He had this problem with his laptop beforehand as well).

Every time I'm over or just in general he has AWFUL connection. He disconnects from Skype and League of Legends constantly, but he always has good ping when he doesn't. It doesn't have to do with his parents being on the internet or anyone else. He doesn't know how it happens and neither do I. He isn't even terribly far away from the house's router.

He would like to know what the problem could be and if there would be any way to fix it.

2. In my house I am directly connected to the internet but my family and I use the wireless internet plenty. I have Roadrunner as my isp and I had no troubles with it in the past. Although like a year ago it seemed like the internet got a bit worse.

My ping in-game has gotten drastically higher but the xbox connection seems to have improved. This problem also has nothing to do with multiple people being on the internet. My parent's mac is literally right above me on the next floor, yet it constantly has awful internet connection and they can barely even use it and wait 5-10 minutes for one page to load on the browser. The iPad also has this problem 2 floors up in my bedroom (I'm in the basement). It never is as bad as the mac, not even close. Like if im watching a Twitch stream it will just stop streaming and I can never get it to work again (sometimes I just move it to a different spot in my room).

Our internet connection used to be perfect. The router has always been in the basement and we used to run purely on just laptops.

I would like to know what the problem is and how I could fix it.

Thank you for reading this and giving me a response. It has been troubling me as I have no clue on wireless internet, I'm more of a computer technical related guy. I know it is a lot to read through but I really would like this to be fixed.

Thank you,
Michael

EDIT: Paragraph rephrasing

For your friend issue try updating the router firmware. With routers when they start failing the can over heat. When they do the wifi connection can go to hell. The other issue is if the unit is open he can have leaches. For your error try updating The routers firmware..some devices wifi chips have issue with some of the older router chipsets.

We both actually have fairly new routers. Neither more than 6 months old. We thought that was the problem but we had no luck with that. How would we go about updating the firmware?

I have Motorola router so it actually won't allow me to do that, but we tried it with his and it was to no avail. Would changing my bandwidth on my router configuration would help?
