Setting Up Static IP and Port Forwarding

I am not very experienced in the networking field and I'm trying to get some simple servers up and running (mumble, minecraft, etc.) I know I need to get a static IP established and then I need to port forward the correct ports. However I wanted to be sure of what I am doing before I started. I was planning on following the steps in this guide to set up the static IP address. I wasn't sure exactly if this was all I needed to do. I am behind a Verizon modem and a Cisco router. When I tried to do this before I ran into trouble because I needed to forward the ports between both computers. Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

More about setting static port forwarding
  1. Most modern OS's and routers will automatically forward most ports as long as NAT is turned on in the router.
