Greetings,

I'm interested in setting up a home server to accomplish a few tasks:

  • ■ Store and stream HD movies and shows to TV
    ■ Store and play large music collection
    ■ Potentially run some low-end game servers like Minecraft for my wife and kids
    ■ Act as a central file-storage for my various laptops, tablets, etc.
I'm not looking to break the bank here, but I don't want to give a budget simply because I'm not really sure what I'm getting myself into here price wise. The server would be most likely running 24/7 so energy optimal would be nice. Also, for the record, I've built desktops before so I'm not afraid to build this server from scratch. Cheers!

Looking at your needs, you might not even need a dedicated graphics card (saves energy too!)
You would want an aftermarket CPU cooler if you plan to run the system 24/7

Here's a list of parts I've put together. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1a5eQ It's about $770
I don't know if you need 2x 2TB HDD or not or do you want a sound card so tweak it a little bit to your liking :)
