External HDD not started automatically

I have since a couple of years a Seagate Free Agent external HDD of 500 Gb that is connected via a USB 2.0 port to my Windows XP desktop. Every evening the FreeAgent software on the external HDD backs up automatically the files of my desktop.
This worked well till a couple of weeks ago when for no apparent reason the external HDD was no longer detected. The light on the external HDD is still blinking but the external HDD (= G drive) is no longer visible in Windows Explorer and the Drive manager status icon in the bar at the bottom of my screen indicates no drive connected.
I tried to plug the external HDD in other USB ports but that does not make the external HDD to be detected automatically during the start up of the desktop.
The only possibility that I have is to start the desktop and then to plug in the power and the USB cable of the external HDD. Doing so, the external HDD is detected (= visible in Windows Explorer as G drive, a green Drive Manager Status icon at the bottom of my screen and I can open all my backed up files on the Free Agent HDD) and I can make back ups at speeds I had before the "issues" started.
The problem is however that it takes at least 10 min for the Auto Play pop up to appear (for a USB card reader or thumb drive it takes less than 10 seconds) and that I have to repeat the work around each time that I start the desktop.
Any suggestions as to what I could do to return to the situation I had before? I am worried that one day my "work around" will no longer work and that I will no longer have access to my back-up's
Thanks in advance for your help

I followed your advice and connected the external HDD to my laptop ... and everything worked more or less well.
I could see the drive in Windows Explorer, I could open files on the external HDD.
There were a couple of minor issues like the icon of FreeAgent was not represented properly and I could not "stop safely the drive" because I got the message that another user was using the drive !!!???
I rebooted the laptop with the external HDD and now every was fine.
I connected the HDD to my desktop again and everything works again as before. I see the drive in Windows explorer, I can open files, I can make a back-up and I can "stop the HDD safely".
I don't understand what happened but your suggestion solved the issue.
Thank you very much
