Exactly what the title asks. And if so, what would you recommend for $50 or less?

Yes.
I bought these exact speakers a few months ago and wasn't exactly happy with them. I bought the AudioEngine D1 (which is a little out of your budget) and it has definitely improved the sound.
Mid ranges seems a lot more crisp plus a more full sounding extension on the low range.

What are you running currently? I was originally off an Asus Sabertooth z77 Motherboard, and this is definitely worth the money.

As far as other sound cards go, I can't comment since I haven't tried any others with these speakers other than my Logitech Premium HD external (which is on my HTPC) which sounded nearly as good IMHO. I suggest you look up some reviews on soundcards in that budget and pick the best for your listening conditions (room size, type of listening, personal preferences etc).

Hope that helps somewhat!

I actually the same motherboard (high five!). I actually might up my budget to under $200. Seeing as my computer is a long term investment. I've actually looked into the D1, and I think right now it's between that and this Asus Xonar Essence

Nice. The Xonar Essence is also a nice card, I did look into that range and I think either way you would be happy!

I liked the idea of the D1 being USB and portable, meaning if I ever get rid of my desktop/need another PCI-E slot I will have one spare.
That's a pretty good price for it, but again, specs mean nothing in audio until you actually hear the product. Compare some reviews between the two and go from there!
