I brought a new computer today here are the specs

Computer Model: HP XW6000 workstation
Processor: 2 x Intel Xeon HT 2.8Ghz = Quad (4) x 2.8GHz
Memory: 1GB (1024GB) RAM (4 x 256MB)
Hard Drive: 40GB
Optical Drive: CD drive
Graphics Card: NVidia NVS 280 PCI Graphics card with Dual DVI splitter cable
Operating System: Windows XP Professional

Only really brought it for the processor. Anyway i have also brought 8GB ram (4x2gb). I have already put them in my computer, but because i am running windows xp at the moments its only picking up 4gb (3.50gb) i tried installing windows 7 64 bit and it said failed does anyone know why i ran windows 7 upgrade advisor it said my computer runs 32 bit? i dont want 32 bit because that will mean only 4 gb out of the 8gb will work with 32bit? i want 64 bit because i want the full 8gb? need help please thanks

I don't think you can upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. You would have to do a full install of Windows. But it's a good thing, an opportunity to clean everything, you start with a clean new OS, only have to install drivers and anti-virus and you're good to go.

I can't imagine why you would buy that, a single modern quad core would be way better and more efficient. It's old, real old.

MC is right. You can't upgrade from 32 to 64 bit. You have to do a fresh install.

I think you just found the problem. These CPUs are so old that they're probably not 64-bit compatible.

Dylan: You probably made a mistake buying this computer. It's too old, hope you didn't pay too much for it, or if it's not too late I would return it. Even if you have 2 x quad-cores, a single modern dual-core would probably outperform them. The other problem is that I checked on the HP website and this system is listed as Windows 2000 and XP compatible only, no drivers for Windows 7. You might be lucky and Windows 7 might have all the drivers built-in, or you'll be able to find some drivers elsewhere, but if there's a missing driver you can't find, tough luck. Don't forget that Microsoft will officially drop support for Windows XP on April 1st 2014 which is in less than a year. After this date, no more security updates so you'll be at risk if you still use a computer with Windows XP.

Or if you want to keep the computer, the other option would be to return the RAM and keep only 4 GB. Then try to install Windows 7 32-bit and pray there's no missing drivers.
