Upgrade Home Network; Cut $$ to TWC!

Currently using Time Warner Cable standard modem (for which I am paying $4 monthly rental) and Netgear WNR8348 v2 Router. HTPC running Win8 is hard wired to router.

Must move HTPC to upper floor of home and change to WiFi connection. Also would like to lose the monthly rental to TWC if that is prudent.

So, I need a modem, router (or combo), and wireless card for the HTPC. Would like all to be compatible and idiot proof as possible as I don't have lots of time for fiddling. Just need it to work for streaming video, etc., no gaming so don't think I need the highest end stuff.

For now to save $$, I may keep the TWC modem and my current router, but still need the wireless card. If I choose this route I need a card that will be compatible when I upgrade the modem/router.

Any help or advice is appreciated. If I have left out anything let me know.

Thanks

Hey there ricklee57,

Could we get some specifications on the HTPC? Do you already own the WNR834B v2 Router?

As long as whatever wireless adapter you purchase is 802.11n compatible, I would say you'll be safe in the future. The simplest wireless adapter solution for you is probably a usb adapter. Any of them come with simple instructions, basically just install software for it, and it will prompt you to plug in the usb adapter at some point.

These are usb adapters, you can sort by price on the left-hand side.

Thanks for your response.
The HTPC is a Shuttle XPC SG31G2 with the following:
Base Memory 639K
Extended Memory 2095104K
Total Memory 2096128K
Widows 8 Professional
Intel Core2 Duo CPU E6550 2.33GHz 1.40 GHz
RAM 2.0 GB

Yes, I own the router. It has been working quite smoothly for about 4 years.

Okay, I would definitely recommend a usb wireless adapter for that computer because space inside is probably limited.

Like I said, pick one that has 802.11n compatibility (that is a type of wireless network). Most, if not all, usb wireless adapters will work with older network types.

Great - Thanks!
I like the Buffalo AirStation N150. It's cheap and has good reviews, so if it will do the job I will order.

Any thoughts on what modem to replace the current rented TWC one?
