I have an old Gateway GT5628 that wasn't working. After replacing faulty RAM everything is working except the on board sound. When i plugged in speakers to the back sound jack, no sound came out. Same with the front jack. With headphones, the sound is intermittent when I move the cord around. There is no open PCI or PCI express slot available for a sound card. The speakers and headphones both work. Any help would great

Bad connection on the front panel headphone jack. It is also cutting off the back jack.

It sounds like a physical issue, rather than software. It put out actual sound, if you wiggle the cable in the jack.

So the PC is actually trying to output, just the jacks aren't working. As this is an "old Gateway", no telling how it got that way.

How are your soldering skills?

as it appears to be a loose connection, find exactly where the looseness is and resolder. or replace the jack.

The PC appears to be outputting sound (software OK), but the physical jack appears to be messed up (hardware not OK).
