Next gen consoles use amd, what does it mean for Nvidia?

So since both consoles use amd gpus, does that mean that games will be optimized for their chipset and nvidia will be left behind?

Now this may be a guess an educated one but a guess nontheless. Game developers arent looking to just leave behind half of the consumers in an entire market. They wouldnt be able to sell there games if people who have already spent good money on hardware cant run there poorly coded crap. Dont worry they wont be releasing all games optimized for amd. They will still have to through the entire game of porting it to whatever it may be back or forth from console or pc. I am also very sure the entire structure for making these games is still different between these markets.

As lazy as developers are getting regarding PC ports, I would say that games will start to run better on AMD hardware. But the difference won't be much. On the plus side though, I do believe will start to see more physics in game using AMD open approach vs. Nvidia's closed PhysX. That's a win for everyone.

holy shit, it really is never a good time to buy a card is it. On one hand i want to upgrade my stock gt 640 3gb ddr3, but on the other hand i want to wait for more info on this.

Since the split between Nvidia and AMD is more like 2 to 1, rather than 50-50, don't expect PC game developers to shoot themselves in the foot against the majority of PC gamers.

Also, as we have seen recently with the Never Settle games, just because a game developer has an AMD relationship, doesn't necessarily mean that the game runs better on AMD cards. Far Cry 2, Crysis 3, and Bioshock Infinite are good examples.

Another issue to consider is that the hardware AMD is supplying for consoles is not the same as the video cards that we have in our PC's. In fact it's quite different. Developing games for the PC requires adoption for a different type of hardware which will negate many of the console-specific optimizations.

Finally, there might even be some concern that AMDs focus on consoles may actually divert attention and resources away from their PC gaming development efforts. There is a reason Nvidia allowed AMD to have both consoles, and Nvidia recently made a point to promote its dedication to PC gaming. Hopefully, AMD will also be able to maintain a strong focus on the PC while devoting so much of its resources towards the console.

I don't see much problem.

The way I look at is currently games are largely optimized for NVidia.
But that doesn't mean they don't run well on AMD. They run just fine on AMD but maybe slightly less optimized.

Even if the optimization shifts to AMD, they will still continue to run just fine on NVidia but maybe a slight be less efficient.

It's the 770 that performs slightly better most of the time.

But the difference is generally so close, you should set performance aside for a while and consider other factors. Basically, the 7970 GHz has free games. With the GTX 770, you get a better card in terms of power consumption, fan noise, and added on technologies, least of which is PhysX.

So I recommend you step outside the performance equation and take a look at the ownership experience and target the card that will work better in the specific games that you intend to play and give you the options that you want.

After reading this article ( http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/06/07/amd-say-pc-ports-of-next-generation-console-titles-are-likely-to-struggle-on-intel-tech/ ) I had many of the same questions as the OP.

Planning a new build for later this year after BF4 comes out and been bouncing back and forth between the choice of an Nvidia and AMD card.

Looks like Nvidia GTX 760 just knocked off the 7950 Boost for the mid-level value buy, but that fact that PC ports may be optimized for AMD cards and a few discounted deals on 7950s and 7970s has me keeping AMD on the list for now, but just barely....

Right now just wondering if AMD will drop some new cards this fall.

Have to agree that it would make no sense for Console ports to lock out PC's running Nvidia, but wonder if AMD might still find some way to gain an advantage in performance.

they're definitely not going to just shit all over nvidia, but the games optimized for amd might run 10 or so fps worse on nvidia cards. Bf3 is optimized for nvidia and generally runs 10-20fps better than amd cards. In the end i think nvidia is the better way to go since they are more mainstream and generally have much more positive reviews, plus they have great driver support. And also apparently the games were running on gtx cards at e3 for te xbox games, so in the end the difference will most likely be minimal.

Forgot MS was running those Xbox One Dev kits using gtx cards.... LOL!

I'm not buying until this fall so I've got some time to scope things out. Hopefully we'll see some console PC ports used in some new card reviews.

Would like to see Tom's Hardware do an article where they attest AMD's claim that Intel and Nvidia hardware will struggle with console ports. Wonder if there's a way to submit an article idea?
