Upgrade CPU or overclock current one?

Last response: in CPUs

So here are my current specs:

MOBO: Gigabyte M68MT-S2 AM3+ socket
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333 (2 x 4GB) Memory w/ CL9 timings
GPU: MSI GTX 670 PE
CPU: AMD FX-4100

The problem is that my CPU is bottle necking my 670 while playing games. So I'm wondering if I should upgrade to an FX-6300 (best CPU in my budget) or just slap an EVO 212 cooler on my FX-4100 and over clock it?

i don't think that u can O.C that much to reach even a fx6100 level with the board u have.
Best would be getting a fx8320 or 8150 bcoz. a fx6300 will bottleneck a gtx670 on stock but if u do a good O.C on the 6300, then you would be fine

You guys do realize most games don't benefit from more than 4 threads...

Overclock as high as you can, anything from AMD will bottleneck that card in games that aren't light on the CPU.

That CPU should be fine for most games. What games are you playing and having issues with?

"Overclock as high as you can, anything from AMD will bottleneck that card in games that aren't light on the CPU"-what evidence do u have?
A good O.C ed 6300 can handle a gtx670 while a 8320 can handle it with ease.
fx4100 will bottleneck a gtx670 in most of the modern games and he is having issues with it and that's why he has posted in the thread.

I run a 6100 @ 4.2 GHz, and I have no bottlenecking issues with my HD 7950 which is only a touch less powerful. A 6300 has higher clocks and better architecture. You should be very happy with it if you do upgrade.

I'm having trouble with almost every game I have been playing (ArmA 2 & 3, Metro Last Light, dead island riptide, etc.). Most of the recent games to come out.

What kind of FPS are you getting on games like Metro or Arma 3?

Oh I forgot to mention that when recording with Fraps it takes a HUGE dent out of my FPS (Dead Island drops nearly 100 FPS when recording)

yeah, fraps absorbs a lot of juice from ur pc while recording. If u have a decent cpu along with decent gpu, then fps will not drop by that much as u are experiencing now.
Ge a fx6300 along with an aftermarket cooler like cooler master hyper 212 EVO and O.C it by 10-15% and u would be just fine.
If u don't want to O.C then get a fx8320 or fx8350. :)

Thanks sour, I think I will be getting the 6300 and bumping it up to 4.1 with the turbo then get the 212 later and oc it.
