Hi

Basiaclly I want to swap my old nVidia quadro FX580 for a new GTX 660, but I've noticed that my old mobo has PCI-e 2.0 x16 slot, but GTX 660 is made for PCI-e 3.0

I've also read that I can use the new GPU with my old mobo, but will there be a performance downgrade and is it worth it to use a GTX 660 with PCI-e 2.0?

Btw, my mobo is fujitsu siemens d2817-a1.

More about : pci card compability pci mobo

Not really no, on a GTX660, less than 4% difference. Really depends on the rest of your system. What PSU does yours have? You probably need to upgrade that too.

Yeah, I know, I'm not sure but I've been told that 500w PSU should be enough.

My CPU is Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83ghz

Yeah 500W is enough if its a decent unit. If you can post the specs on the side, photo preferably, then we can be sure, but it should be fine.

The side with the sticker with the voltages and rail information on.

12v x 17Amps = 204W...

You are gonna HAVE to upgrade that, modern PCs almost only use the 12v rail, and your only has 204w on the 12v rail.

One more thing, why doon't you consider a GTX760, or is it out of your budget?

Sure, I was going to do that anyways. But after I upgrade my PSU for 500w one, and then my current GPU for a GTX 660, It'll run normally in a PCI-e 2.0 slot ? Thats basically all I need to know. I just want to buy my GPU and play games :D

Yes, it will. Sorry in the habit of double checking everything.

Consider a GTX760 though, its much faster and should not be much more expensive from Newegg.

Just butting in...
I'm running a HD7950 off a PCI-E 2.0 MB, no issues and AMD can be a little fussier than Nvidia on the PCI-E configuration.
Good points on the power supply, look for no more than 550 Watts from a good maker like: Antec, corsair, Silverstone, Pc Power and Cooling, OCZ, FSP or Seasonic.
Novuake makes a sensible point with the GTX760, as gamers We've never had so much power available for so (relatively) little, it's a little faster than my 7950 and that has no problems at high/very high/you have to be joking! settings on a single 1080 display.
If possible, try to overclock the CPU.

Well, thanks :D  I'll definetly consider the GTX 760, already gathered some information about it and it seems that it was released just yesterday. So I guess I need to wait a bit until it'll be for sale in Eastern EU. It seems a very nice GPU for that price though. :)

As always keep a close eye on the prices, we have already had several posters who (like you) live outside the USA/Western Europe and they are finding the 'old' GTX670 is a better choice-it's only slightly slower but in some countries can be a fair bit less expensive.
