Spin Down Secondary Hard Drive

I am going to use a Solid State hard drive for main storage in my new build, but also installing a mechanical hard drive for backups.

How can I spin down the secondary mechanical hard drive when no backup is running, but keep the main SSD running. I don't want the secondary hard drive running all the time using power and making heat.

I will install Windows 8.

Don't do anything, Windows will power down automatically after 20mins or so unless you have fiddled with power management settings.

Another dumb question: How do I tell of the secondary hard drive is spinning? And how can I spin it up or down manually?

Settings apply to all HDD's but with an SSD as a primary, chances are it never will. You should hear the 2nd drive spin up when needed and you can't manually spin down/up.
