Hi there i built my first pc a while ago but opted for a older graphics card at the time but as a reward for finishing uni would like to buy myself something with a bit more power. Am just wondering if anyone could offer any advice on what would be the best card i could put in my machine without it being overkill. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

Currently i like the look of the amd 7970

Specs are:

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6870

RAM: Corsair XMS3 DDR3 (16GB)

Case: Antec Three Hundred

Power supply: OCZ 600w ModXStream Pro

Hard disk drive: WD Caviar Green 2TB

Solid state drive: Intel 320 Series 160GB

Monitor: Asus 24-inch VH242H

7970 isnt worth the money anymore. Look into something like a 760. Its the new card to get at 250 dollars and about 7% slower then a 7970

You already have a decent card in the 6870.
I don't think you motherboard will support sli, so a second 6870 is not an option.
As to the strongest upgrade you could buy, it would be a $1000 titan, not that I recommend that.
If you have $650 or so to spend, look at a superclocked GTX780 with the reference titan type cooler.
Past that, make your graphics jump a significant one, or you may be disappointed. Likely to a $400 GTX770 or 7970 class card.
I think the newly announced GTX770 might be a better option:

Your 'machine' as it stands won't have a problem driving any of the available top end cards, and with a little overclock would be a superb match for something like a GTX690 or a Titan. But they are way overkill. A good match would be a GTX770 which has a great price/performance ratio. It trades blows with, and beats a 7970 most of the time, and is an amazing card. Depending on what res you game at, with your system you would be good to game at 1080p+ at very good FPS, although for Ultra in Crysis 3 you might need an sli config, but at least you have the option to do that. Even with one GTX770 you would have a great gaming experience, and be able to play most games at ultra settings, with some of the newest games slightly dialled back to maintain 60+ fps

i really wish people would stop quoting this website's gpu rankings. Not only do they contradict 95% of independent reviewers, but they make some incredibly deceptive rankings which do not represent real world performance in any way.

I challenge you to find a single 7970 at stock which won't beat an superclocked 760 by 10-20% in pretty much any game. The 760 is a very nice gpu, but to say things like "8% slower" then a 7970 is just silly. Especially since pretty much every bench puts the GE 7970 a step faster then the SC 770, SC 680, and SC 670...

I tend to agree these benchmarks seem fishy. If the 770 is almost equal to the 7970, then the 760 should match nicely against the 7950 which is around the same price point.

Techpowerup fishy? TPU is one of the cornerstones of review sites and if by independent reviewers you mean Linus  and that goof from Teksyndicate. Do yourself a big favor and stop listening to those fools.

Sorry i should have been more specific Wanted to try and keep it to around £350 unless there was much of a advantage to spending that little bit more :)

Thanks for all the reply's so far, i wasn't expecting so many so quick, I mostly want to be able to play games on ultra settings at the max resolution i can for my monitor which is 1920x1080 1080p, I can play most games now with the graphics and resolution turned down slightly here and there but with games like battlefield 4 coming out i want to get the most out of my machine that i can while it lasts :)
