Alright so here's the deal, I'm almost done completing my new PC build, but I can't decide which GPU to take, A lot of people mention the 7970 GHz, the 770, and recently I've been looking at a SLI configuration of two 760s (MSI gaming edition). I need something that will give me good framerates on a 1200p configuration and I need it to be future proof to get graphics that will be superior to next gen console ones, so the question is which configuration should I get, and if I opt for the 770, should I get the 2gb or the 4gb my budget for GPUs is about $450 but i don't mind spending a bit more for quality! (GTX 780 is out of the question unfortunately)

Here are the specs of my build:
CPU: FX-8350
CPU Cooler: Corsair h100i
Motherboard: Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8GB, 1600
Case: Antec DF-85 (i know its an expensive case, i didn't buy it myself!)
PSU: Corsair 750W
OS: Windows 7 (64 bit)

I'm really interested in overclocking my CPU and possibly the GPU depending if i want better performances, this is in fact my first build ever and i hope to make upgrades about every 3-4 years.

I really appreciate the help of the community of TomsHardware, and i appreciate every answer, thank you.

If it sets your mind to rest.

The xbox is running 8gb of shared ddr3.
The PS4 is 8gb of shared ddr5 , running on a custom redesign of the 7870 card.

So any of those card configurations are going to exceed the consoles anyway.

The free games are still worth mentioning as you can sell off the codes of the games you already have for a bit of money back ;) The 770 and 7970 are near enough equals so it just depends how much you care about the money. The 770 may be a bit kinder on your energy bills though :p

and ddr4 RAM chips are coming to PC's somepoint this year or early next. Don't know if they will need motherboard replacements... haven't been keeping up to date on that yet :p

SLI 760's will give you more raw power, but not all games support SLI configs, and cooling them is more difficult.

A 770, can max out crysis 3 on a single 1440 monitor at a respectable and playable 36 fps, so will max most games or at the very least run them at high if you want more FPS. It is simpler to cool.

The 7970 is on par with the 770, performs better on some, worse on others, but in a lot of places comes with far cry blood dragon, crysis 3, tomb raider and bioshock infinite for free making it good value. Is better at larger multimonitor set ups. But if you intend to add a second GPU in a year or two, well AMD still currently has more issues with xfire than nvidia with SLI. (They are working on it and there are third party workarounds but... meh :p)

2gb is fine for a single screen, but if you see yourself getting a second, or a larger res screen, you will benefit from the 4gb version.

Thanks a lot for the answer, but considering the PS4 is going to have 8 gb of ddr5 shared ram, could it be possible that the textures will require more than 2gb? I know that currently there are Skyrim mods that are very taxing on the GPU. And i will most likely be playing on a 120 hz screen or a 240 hz led screen, so that is the reason I am thinking about the 760s being that they will cost me about 60-70$ more than the 770. Everyone uses the arguments of the games that are bundled with the Radeon GPUs but the fact is I already have half the games and can get the other half for cheap so that is not my main concern. I'm more interested in running stunning games that have yet to be released like watchdogs on my gaming PC and getting better results than "next-gen consoles" (since switching to PC gaming I realized how dated the graphics looked on the old consoles and how PC gaming will always have cutting edge technology, being that the GPUs in the next gen are supposed to be dated so to speak :pt1cable: )
