I am Putting together an Htpc build using the AMD A6 chicp because of the low power and the low cost. I was wondering if it would be worth it to get the new kentsfield chip over the trinity chip? or would i barely see any performance gain for playing media, general use, and light gamng.

I will be pairing thr chip with:
Corsair builder 430w
8 Gigs of memory (probably gskill)
Asrock FM2A75 Pro4-M Mobo

Anyone with experience in these parts see this as a viable build? and again, Which chip would be more worth it, seeing as newegg has a shell shocker deal for the trinity chip and the mobo i want for $119.98 today.

More about : 5400k 6400k htpc build

I was going to mention the deal they had today. was tempted to buy it myself........ it is dual core you know?..........

the ram, buy and run it in pairs and get ddr3 1866 not 1333. The apu runs better with faster ram.

I think ati has the best performance for your needs. ( amd )

get an a10 richland apu. slap a pair of 1866 ddr3 ram and take it up to 2133mhz and you'll have a very good htpc capable of lightweight 1080p gaming. sure, it'll cost you a few bucks more but it will be well worth it. but if cash is tight, your current build will suffice.

Thank you for your replies. I originally was going to go with the A10 but for less than the price of the A10 alone i could get that shellshocker deal for the A6 and a mobo. Im mainly looking for something to replace my xbox 360 in terms of being able to play all my media and simillar games that would run on the xbox. Do you guyd think the A6 trinity would be okay for this purpose?

Super old thread I know. But instead of starting a new, Im borrowing this. My dad turns 50 and I´m building a HTPC as a gift. He uses a mini pc laptop, max resolution 1024x768 or something like that, lol.

And from what I have seen there are ny big difference on the A6 5400K vs the 6400K. The difference in price is very small. But, in reality, would it actually matter witch one if the PC only is for movies, music and internet surfing? Ok, some solitaire or something. But no gaming what so ever. Could I not simply bump the multiplier to 6400K levels? They use the same cooler and have the same TDP. And I´m going for the Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-HD3 motherboard, the FM2+ A88X chipset, future proofing it somewhat. So, on a solid mb this should not be impossible or even hard to do?
