This is my old rig:

*NZXT GAMMA Classic Series GAMA-001BK
*ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AM3+
*G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
*AMD Phenom II X4 965
*Sapphire HD 5770
*Thermaltake 550W PSU

Yesterday, I got my new parts in the mail. I upgraded to these:

*G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
*SAPPHIRE 100354OC-2L Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition
*CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W

Since then, other than the increased ram, I haven't seen much of an increase in games. Specifically the GPU demanding ones, like BF3. I usually play at low, and get 60-70fps. Since the upgrade, If I push it to medium, I get 60 with dips into 40 when it gets intense. I see other people playing on ULTRA with 60fps and an inferior CPU. Which confuses me.

The only thing that's ever been a problem with this rig, is the Phenom can't seem to be cool. With a "COOLER MASTER RR-H101-22FK-RA 80mm" cooler. I idle at around 63C and under load it pushes up to 75C. I've tried re-applying thermal paste multiple times with different coolers and different pastes, but same result. This is the only thing I can think of. Did I get a bad card? Or do I just have a bad CPU all along?

no way should your cpu be idling at 63c, your heatsink isnt on right and is overheating and throttling itself in games, take it off clean it and put new compound on making sure its all spread evenly

are you overclocked, have your checked your bios settings? what coolers have your tried maybe they just arent enough to cool it, any 80mm is old school unless its a stock heatsink

what phenom do you have as well? it could be bottlenecking your new card

My system is relatively free of dust. The fan doesn't spin much more than it is now. I think it's maxed out? I have a 965, as stated in the original post. It's on stock settings.

I tried the stock fan, then upgraded to the one listed in the post. Same results.

Did you clean off old and apply new thermal paste when you switched coolers?

It's not unusual for battlefield 3 to dip especially if your doing multiplayer. It's pretty CPU intensive and the 965 will hold you back. I would think the CPU cooler you have would do a better job, reapply thermal paste and if that doesn't work look into the bigger brother the hyper 212 EVO.
