You card is supported by the opensource Radeon driver. Any modern distro will support it.
As to why you "can't get into" ubuntu, that is hard to say with out any logs or other information...
Suggest you try "linux mint" instead of ubuntu.

Any of the major distributions will support that GPU. If they don't include the driver outright it will exist in whatever package repository exists for that dist.
The problem is that i couldn't get into linux in the first place as this was a clean install, so i wondered if there was a distro that had drivers out of box...
