Hi, it's been a while since last time I logged in here. I was away from computer related topic for few years and I recently got my interest back and decided to to a small personal project. But I'm having trouble because I've never built such machine.

I'm trying to build one system(server?) for my family that could replace all the computers that each of my family members are using. Is it possible to build such system? I just want to have one chassis that serves multiple monitors & tasks that each of my family members will be using. Is there any way I can do this without the need to put any chassis at all next to those monitors? I'm trying to build the computer that can even handle a single user playing game (like Starcraft 2) while others are doing basic tasks like watching video or web surfing.
Will I need special equipment/software to achieve this goal?

One reason why I want to do this is that I'm tired of fixing each of my family's poorly managed computers one by one (We have 4 family member and each have one computer). By having one system, upgrading one system will benefit everyone and I can do the managing more conveniently. Also, having fun building it ;).

Hmm, there some possibilities, but they are more for enterprise solutions.

Both Citrix and VMWare now offer GPU virtualization, so in theory you could set up one powerful computer with a heavy duty graphics card and then hand everyone an ipad or android tablet or cheap laptop to use as a terminal. You would need a decent wireless AC router.

Software licensing would set you back a lot of money though as this is intended for large companies to spin up virtual machines for transient or hourly workers.

I prefer VMWare over Citrix, but we aren't using a very new Citrix platform at work whereas VMWare has been in constant upgrade as we prepare to leverage its capabilitie for Windows 8 client software testing.

I guess virtualization is the only way to go, as far as the software portion...I was hoping I could find a solution to have single system that serves multiple "stand-alone" monitors spread out the house. I think I've seen similar set ups in schools, but I think each client had low power system connected to the monitor.. But I guess there aren't direct solution. May be I need to find a work around things?

Wow, I wasn't able to find the exact term for what I was trying to achieve, but really good find there manofchalk. Thanks for the input guys. But I guess finding out how I can wirelessly connect the monitors is my next homework...

Wireless monitors are a recent development and are kind of expensive, but they do let you run a monitor I think up to 10 feet or so from the base station. Not like running a remote session over the network this is a wireless connection dedicated to video.

With a centralized computer you may still need terminal machines, $250 laptops or something, for your more mobile users.
