I have a Cooler Master 400W Elite Power with 2 16amp 12v rail so im wondering if its possible to use this card on it temporarily? Will it shutdown if its stressed too much or is it still within the safezone? I will get my videocard tomorrow but haven't had the time for a PSU yet so just wanted to check if the card works.

Thanks a lot in advance.

You might be OK temporarily, if you don't have too much else drawing power, such as case acessories, fans, hdds, etc.
Try use a power supply calculator and add around 20% to get a good idea of what you need.

The main motherboard connector (i.e. (20+4)-pin connector) and the one 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector are on the +12V2 rail.

The (4+4)-pin CPU power connector, 4-pin Molex peripheral power connectors, SATA & Floppy disk drive power connectors are on the +12V1 rail.

You will need to use a dual 4-pin Molex peripheral to 6-pin PCI-E adapter cable for the second 6-pin PCI-E connector on that graphics card.

The Club 3D HD 7870 jokerCard will be drawing around 14 Amps from the +12V rail(s) during gaming and around 16 Amps when running Furmark.

I don't think that PSU is going to survive for very long under that kind of stress. I figure at least one of the PSU's protection circuits will be triggered.

Hi - not only is ko correct that it won't survive very long under that stress, Hardware Secrets
found that PSU would shut down on any load in excess of 15a on +12v1, and 14a on +12v2,
so I figure it would be wise to get a less power hungry vid card, or bite the bullet and replace your
PSU, especially if you live in the US. There's all kinds of deals running on PSU's.

Thanks for the replies guys, i already knew it wouldn't be able to handle any great load from the GPU but just for the sake of trying it out i put it in it went to windows desktop and i just shut it off, comfortable to know that it works at least and know getting a better PSU. Thanks for the answers already knew it sort of but some input of others is also nice.

Now for those that are actually coming back at this thread, don't use it as others said don't want to risk it was pretty nervous while trying it :p
