hey guys,

so this is my build so far:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1agWy

I've bought nearly all the components, just missing the motherboard and memory.

I just found out I have an extra $300 to spend on the system, and I'm not sure where to spend it on.

My top 3 choices:
1) Switch the Asus Z87-Pro for something more high end
2) Faster memory (corsair dominator platinum?)
3) Better video card (GTX 660 ti or GTX 760)

I rarely play games. My idea of gaming is playing Age of Empires...or Civ 4. I spend 90% of my time in Lightroom and Photoshop, and a little bit of time rendering video.

I do plan on overclocking the cpu.

Thanks!

Haven't purchased the video card yet either. So the $160 for the 650 ti Boost can add to the cost of the 770.

Well, its literally the only weak part in your system. Ordinarily I'd suggest spoiling yourself with speakers and keyboards, but the keyboard and mouse isnt so important for a non gamer, unless you're a fast typist like me, then you wont gain any benefit from a gaming keyboard. And by fast I mean capable of hitting 4-5 keys per second.

Even then if you buy a cheap keyboard without n-key rollover or anti-ghosting protection all you have to do is type more carefully and slowly.

So the GPU would be my recommendation. Unless you really have no intention of playing any new titles, then I'd indulge in the best speakers I can buy, but then I'm a bit of an audiophile with regards my music.

I never put much thought into the keyboard and mouse...I'm using a cheapo wireless mouse I got on sale for 9.99 and my apple keyboard from back in the day...I like the slim profile :)

The speakers I have right now are the Altec Lansing FX6021's. Bought them a few years ago and they are still going strong. Any suggestions on what to replace them with?

Not a clue, It's been 3-4 years since I last dabbled in the speaker world, I ended up getting the Creative gigaworks t40 series 2 at £140 at the time, they are holding relative value still at £90

Their original purchase price exceeds the value of my current pc ;)

They've been pretty faithful for stereo, but I miss my expired bass block.

So a surround set would be nice, unless your music would drive the neighbours to suicide :p

As a secondary observation, that disc drive is pretty expensive. Have you considered you usage at all? In this day and age disc drives are getting far less use than they used to see, unless your playing blu-ray movies and games, are you going to use it much?

For my soon to be new PC I'm getting a bulk OEM disc drive, its pretty much only going to be used for driver installs on setup and OS install. Maybe ripping the occasional CD so I havent bothered investing such a sizable chunk of funding to it :)
