Hey, I just recently purchased MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Intel Z87 and built my first computer for the first time. When I first plugged in my headphones, Windows set the Speakers playback device to be the default. I have a playback device named Realtek Digital Output and I'm wondering if this is device is suppose to be the default? If it is, I couldn't find the jacks. The two jacks that are part of the Realtek Digital Output device is Rear Panel Optical Jack and Rear Panel RCA Jack. If it is suppose to be the default device, where are the jacks and will I be able to stick my headphone jack in?

Thanks for looking at my newb question!

The digital outputs are only used for devices that have digital inputs - usually found only on expensivish A/V receivers. I don't think many (i.e. any) headphones will have a digital input because it would need both a digital to analogue decoder chip AND an amplifier in order to drive the headphone speakers (and to do this your headphone would obviously also need an external power source, either from battery or wall socket)! More than likely your headphone should simply plug into a the 3.5mm analogue audio jack on the back of your mobo or front of PC case (usually it's green).
