For awhile my computer had been having restarts (WHEA error due to thermal issues). Just yesterday the computer completely stopped turning on all together, I have been testing it see what could have failed and am about 70% sure that the motherboard is completely dead.
I tried plugging in another power supply but the computer did not turn on. I then tried testing the power supply using the method found here using a spare cd-rom drive I had. The drive and the PSU ran normally. Lastly, I had another motherboard lying around so I plugged that into the PSU and it did not power anything on. Granted, I took this particularly board to a repair shop a few years ago and was told it was dead but I was never really sure myself.
So, baring that their isn't another way of being 100% sure that my motherboard(s) are dead, I could use some advice in buying a new one that will last me longer then 2 years. Do more expensive motherboards with basic specifications tend to last longer? Does form factor play a role in how long and durable they are? My case is a bit cramped so I would prefer a smaller card as long as it will last me a long time
And on an PSU related question: how do I determine what the wattage of my PSU needs to be in order to handle all the hardware I will have plugged in?
