Hi everyone,

Earlier in the week my headset was working fine. However, a couple of days ago when I tried to play an mp3 through windows media player I got the error that said "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

I checked device manager, and saw lots of exclamation marks next to things like microsoft kernel acoustic echo canceller/audio splitter/DRM descrambler, Microsoft streaming clock proxy, Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio compatibility driver, Sigmatel High Def audio Codec and USB audio device. All of these had the "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" error listed on them.

Going into Control Panel > Sounds and Audio devices > Audio tab there are no devices listed in the sound playback dropdown.

The headphones work - I've checked them on another machine. I've tried system file checker. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the drivers (both manufacturer drivers, and auto-find drivers). I tried to do a system restore to a point last week, but it failed.

Please can someone advise what the problem might be, or what extra information I can provide to help troubleshoot?

Thank you for reading :)

It is follows from your description of the problem that it seems to me that is troubles with your USB
hardware devices.
Try to check another USB port.
Also, if reinstalling of USB / your headset drivers not solves the problem then carefully check
for any possible damages of motherboard electronic elements.
Best Regards.

Thank you for your reply. I've tried other ports but have had no luck. There is a power light on the headset which lights up when I plug them in, and there's a noise that briefly comes through the headphones, but then nothing.

Further to this - the second batch of files to the USB device caused a recurrence of the error 41. I am suspecting now some sort of physical problem with the device, which can be handled by the W7 driver, but not by the primitive on-board device equivalent (when used stand-alone). Investigations continue. Although maybe this device is now headed for retirement after a good innings.
