i wanted to clean off thermal paste from my processor, but i couldnt find the isopropyl alcohol, when i ask the pharmacy store they give me spirit which doctors apply before injection..
can i simply remove the paste with a tissue paper?

Solution

i see no issue in leaving the grey haze--my temps are excellent and i leave it

i usually just wipe it off with a lint free cloth and dont bother with isopropyl alcohol or anything

tissue paper may be too soft and little bits may come off

but i have used kitchen roll paper before

some people may say you must use the isopropyl alcohol but i dont see any problem if you dont

all that was left on mine was a very very faint grey haze which i then put the new paste over

You should look for isopropyl alcohol at the pharmacy or at drug stores, but you can also get it online (500ml for 5$)
You should not use regular ethanol at 96% (the stuff they probably gave at the pharmacy) as this leaves the above mentioned grey haze, which invalidated the purpose of new thermal paste, since the micro gaps will still be full of old thermal paste.

Water is worse than just scrapping, as it adds to the possibility of electrical damage, corrosion; at best it just does nothing.

Some thermal paste brands sell "special" thermal paste remover, but the results don't differ much from isopropyl, these are sold online

I have never tried to use nail polish remover, but I'm guessing real acetone (drug store acetone/propanone) is better than acetone free nail polish remover - be careful with drug store acetone, make sure to read the label. Acetone might not work at all or be harmful like water, as I've said, no experience using it.

I hope to have been of help.

i couldnt get it online as the dealer charges too much ...Rs. 1,500 for a 500 ml bottle ... i stay in mumbai.
i even had gone to the electronics market for the isopropyl but they gave me a bottle labelled IPA.. the bottle didnt specify whether it was 70% or 90%
