I need to change some hardware

Hi, when i first bought my computer, it ran any game i could find at 60 - 120 fps. (leagueoflegends, bf3, tf2, and others). But now, some time later, i have noticed a huge decrease in fps - 15 to 30. My cpu and gpu almost get as warm as 100 C when i play games. (i have cleaned the inside)

do i need to upgrade my hardware?

Specs

cpu: intel core i7-2600k 3.4Ghz
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti
8 gigs of ram (4x2)
mainboard: ami maximus IV GENE-Z

maybe i should get water cooling as well?

Solution

Marcus, USAFRet. is on the right track here. Maximum temp, from Nvidia, for a 560Ti is 97-99C. Are all your fans spinning up to their rated RPM? You indicate you cleaned your case; did you blow it out with canned or compressed air (if using an air compressor limit output to 25-40psi)? Check the heatsink to make certain it hasn't worked loose; or remove it, clean it and the CPU, replace the old thermal paste and reinstall the heat sink.
Just some thoughts, hope they help.

you could use a graphics upgrade, but honestly performance on the same games should just decrease like that. when's the last time you cleaned up your software? maybe you are due for a back-up and fresh install of Windows

If the PC is running the same tasks (games), and over time performance decreases (fps) while temperature increases...something else is going on.

Don't add parts until you determine exactly what the cause is.

Are you playing the same games, or newer more demanding ones?

Yes, i have checked and updated all the drivers

do that.

also, contact the manufacturer of your graphics card if it is still within warranty. maybe something is wrong and they'll fix it for you

I just got hold of some thermal paste, gonne reapply that tomorrow. When i do that, i'm also going to clean the whole inside once again, and check if all components and fans are placed correctly and in order. I do not know how to reinstall the heat sink, or what it is for that matter, but google is my friend. will get back to you as soon as i have the time :)

Before you start on the heatsink and thermal paste, READ the 'sticky' thread/post at the start of the Components Forum re. removing thermal paste etc.; much information there about how to do it correctly. Right below that is a tutorial on installing an Intel heat sink, should read that, too.
You didn't tell us what brand thermal past you obtained, but make certain it is paste and not adhesive/glue. The manufacture of the thermal compound should also have information on their website as to how much to use and how to apply it.
Simply; the heat sink is the large metal, usually finned, aluminum or copper thing on top of your CPU - it has a fan on it that blows air down onto or through the heatsink in order to keep the CPU cool and within thermal specs. You didn't tell us what brand PC you have, but most pre--builts will use a stock Intel cooler on the CPU.
Keep us posted

I've reapplied the thermal paste. And the cpu is now a lot cooler. The GPU on the other hand is still getting a bit hot, but i am running the games i like at 60 fps now, and i guess it's no point trying to get it back to 120 fps :p so case closed? :)

Check the anti aliasing in your game settings. that might be what is dropping your frame rate
What temp is your GPU running while gaming?

About 60 C

60C under load is fine. And much better than your previous 100C.

Problem fixed, with no new parts purchase.

MUUUCCCHHHH! Better. And as USAF said, without spending a lot of money!
