I'm searching for advice on using a security camera setup over IP. Since my internet connection is dynamic, how can I give my security camera an "address" so that I can view it anytime from anywhere over the net?

most home based security cameras come bundled with software that allows for streaming the video feed and in some cases, controlling the camera.

Just be sure to set a password up, cause if you don't, anyone with an internet connection can do a google search and view the video feed...

if you need to supply an IP to access from a remote location, than just set up port forwarding on the router to forward anything from say port number 2345 to the camera.

And with a dynamic ISP IP, just check it every once in a while. They typically don't change more than once every 6 months or so.

I believe the question can be "how can you assign a static IP address in a DHCP environment"?

You can assign a range of IP addresses for the rest of the devices, saving a few addresses (of the total range of the router) for instances like this, where you need to assign one specific address to a specific device. You can then assign that static IP to the camera and you're done. The router will always give the camera that IP address, and the rest of the devices can be assigned dynamic IPs from the general pool whenever they connect.

if you use the camera does not build in DDNS, than you can get a URL from the DDNS provider like http://www.zoneedit.com/

http://www.dynamip.com/

, you register an account there and then you will get a url, after that, enter you camera configuration, choose the DDNS sever, change it to manual, and put in your account name, password. after activated, you can view the camera with the URL you get from the DDNS provider.

Now most IP camera build in DDNS, you can just view it on the broswer or app.
