Will I keep my files if I install the Windows 8.1 preview?

Solution

Yes, you might. I'll be installing it on a secondary laptop at home this weekend. Currently running Win8, so we'll see. I wouldn't run it as my primary system anytime soon.

From Microsoft:
"If you decide that you want to install Windows 8.1 Preview using the ISO, you won't be able to uninstall it. If you decide to go back to your previous operating system, you'll need to reinstall it using the recovery or installation media that came with your PC, which is typically DVD media.

If you're running Windows 8 and you don't have recovery media, you might be able to create a USB recovery drive. If you're running Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP and you don’t have recovery media, you might be able to create it from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more information. After you install Windows 8.1 Preview, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows."

This leads me to believe that it will blow away the entire current installation.

"Windows 8.1 Preview is prerelease software that may be substantially modified before it’s commercially released. Microsoft makes no warranties, express or implied, with respect to the information provided here. Some product features and functionality may require additional hardware or software. "

I just updated from Windows 8 to 8.1 and I still have all my files right where I left them. It might start you out in a mode where things are bigger than they usually are but to fix this you can go to (Right click on the desktop) Screen Resolution --> Make text and other items smaller. From there you can move the slider back to normal and sign out and back in for the changes to take effect.

In short, no, you will not lose ANY of your files.

Going from 8 to actual 8.1 as you have done, is quite different than going from 8, to 8.1 Preview, then to actual 8.1.
