I am currently building a PC right now and when I put this motherboard on PC Part Picker it claims "Some Intel H61 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Ivy Bridge CPUs". This is my first time ever building a gaming computer. What does this mean?? Are these parts compatible?? And how do I perform the BIOS update??

Solution

Yes, you'll be fine. I do recomend downloading the BIOS update and updating it on your first power on to ensure everything is working correctly.

As for the chipset, it won't really affect your performance. But without SATA3, SSDs won't be able to work at their full speed. And if you are gaming, there is a little performance increase with 1600MHz RAM (nothing too significant though). There are some really cheap B75 boards that MSI are offering. You might take a look.

H61 was built for Sandy Bridge. It will work perfectly with Ivy Bridge with a BIOS flash. It is needed because the H61 chipset was made before IB existed.

You'll be better off with a B75 though. It has SATA3, USB3, supports 1600MHz RAM and, less importantly, PCIe 3.0.
The B75 is overall a better platform for a very small price difference.

If you need to perform a BIOS update, go on the manufacturer's website for detailed instructions. Not all motherboards updates the same way. You should do it anyway, regardless of the chipset. It will ensure the stability of your PC.

H61 was launched with sandy bridge. Over time, bios updates supported ivy bridge.
If you are buying a new motherboard, it will come with a current bios, so I would not be worried.

To be certain, go to the web site of your H61 motherboard candidate and look at the section for supported cpu's. You should see your cpu listed, and perhaps a note as of bios xxxx and a date.
If the date is not recent, you are good to go.

So if I buy th motherboard I shoulld be just fine? And if I have any problems with the update I should just check Asus' website?? And I cant change the motherboard, unless it will affect my performance, because I am on a budget
