I just bought 4x8 GB Corsair dominator platinum 1866 c9. I'm now kinda wondering if this purchase will be justified . Or should I just go for 2x8 1600 instead of 4x8 1866 c9.

What do you think?

Should i return it?

Depends on what your doing and if it works well with your system. If it is just gaming and general use (interwebs etc...) then 4x8 is overkill. Even 2x8 is a lot for that. What is your system and what are you doing with it?

Don't laugh at me. :D

I'm mostly doing gaming and a few video editing. I LOVE watch movies. I mean a lot, so I will get a 27-30 monitor.

My current parts are

corsair obsidian 900d
Maximus vi extreme
h110
128 840 pro/1tb wd black
860 seasonic
gtx 770 one. i will buy another next month.

so now i just cannot decide the ram as i want it cool as well as performance well. i'm not really sure if corsair dominator platinum will be perfectly compatible with haswell.

So i would like to hear your opinion on this.

Thanks :D

Thanks Man. You've been help me a lot lately. Well, it's true that only a few people need 32gb as of now. but i just can't convince myself of buying cheaper rams as almost all my parts are top of the line, so i just thought i should buy nice rams too.

So help me here make rational decision.

For the video work, 16 GB may not be outlandish. But 32 GB really only makes sense if you're doing some very heavy-duty work. And 1866 does give a slight performance boost - up to you whether the higher price is worth it (also depends on the offers available at any given time).

16 GB DDR3-1866 wouldn't be a crazy waste of money, nor is it at all likely that it would ever hold you back. So that seems worth recommending.

I got it from new egg, and they offer me 20% off + 9% tax in CA. Is it good?

Well, I'd never buy or suggest to anyone to buy cheap DRAM, and you'll always here the comments about high end DRAM not being worth it, which comes from people that haven't used it, and in particular don't know or understand DRAM...if you are sitting with 32GB of 1866, there's nothing wrong with that, even if you have no immediate need for that total amount for your apps, etc...you could create a RAMDisk with a healthy chunk of it and load apps into, I even have some that will copy a game onto it....if you ever seem games that run better off an SSD than a regular harddrive, then you'll love a game from a RAMDisk...It often comes down to budget, if there's something you'd rather do with the difference of the price (and depending where you got it, they may charge a restocking fee) then go lower....Then too, if you plan on the rig for a couple of years, as memory requirements go up for apps/programs, you'd be ahead of the game already having the DRAM

I think I've asked you about ram speed before, and i remember you said based on my post, 1866 would be the perfect fit in terms of performance and future proof, and that's why this time i chose to buy 1866 is because of you said that, and i'm really appreciated here.

so now it's up to whether i should go for 16 or 32. I'm also not sure if corsair dominator platinum will be fully compatible with haswell as maximus vi extreme. can you enlighten me on that? thanks !

I was going to buy a fully loarded 27 iMac. since i saved that money, i decided to build myself a powerful and nice pc. i've owned a few macs, so i have a pretty high requirement on pc in terms of quality and performance, and that's why i chose to buy those expensive parts which i know i don't need it.

Damn man. I hate myself .:D

What's the platform? What's your main use for the system? (basically why do you need 32GB of RAM?) Do you plan to overclock the memory?

Even if you somehow answered FM2, high-res video editing or virtual machines or RAMdisk, and yes, I'd still be inclined to say no. Unless you're going for absolute performance, which doesn't seem to be he case based on your question, I really don't think it's worth it to go for greater than 1600 MHz memory on Intel platforms. There have been several articles on Tom's that came to the same conclusion. If you have something like a 6800K on FM2, and you're using the integrated graphics, then higher memory frequencies actually make a lot of sense. But even then there are cheaper alternatives that would probably get you better performance in games, such as higher clocked lower capacity kits (16 or 8GB). If you're doing high-res video editing, what are you doing on FM2?

Hope you sort of understand what I'm trying to get at. I can't think of many reasons to spend that much on memory.

Yeah, you guys are right on this. I'm gonna look for a relatively cheaper ram. I think i'm gonna return maximus vi extreme for hero then.

It's hot in south cal, and i have to drive down to microcenter to return it. DAMN myself. :D
