4.1 ghz i5 3570k at 40c idle to hot?

I recently built a new pc, and am a complete novice at overclocking. I overclocked my i5 3570k to 4.1 ghz, and now my system runs at 40C idle, and about 80C under prime95. I was wondering if that is a safe temp. here are my specs
CPU- i5 3570k
Mobo- Asus p8z77-v lk
RAM- 8gb crucial 1600mhz
CPU cooler- hyper 212 evo
Case- NZXT phantom 410

  1. That seems a little warm at idle, that's for sure. I have the same motherboard/cpu and most likely ram as well, but I was using a thermaltake Frio cooler, and my idles were 28° C or so. The Evo should be about the same idle temp. too. What is your ambient temp. like?

Couple of °'s C maybe, but not twelve. I also had the same overclock as you too. Make sure the cooler is attached well with just enough thermal paste. Also make sure you have good airflow from your case fans too. i don't believe it'll cause any harm to you cpu, it's just a little warmer than expected.
  5. Thanks. I checked my thermal paste, and found I hand't quite installed my heatsink fan correctly. After I reinstalled it, my temps went down to 32-33C. Thanks again for your help.
  6. 32-33C. < perfect
