I have tried asking about this problem many times on this forum but i don't know the exact cause so don't always know what category to put it in. Anyway this problem has only recently been bothering me again and i get very confused as to what is causing it.

The problem: what happens is i'm just in a skype call, browsing the internet or playing games then suddenly my screen will go black and a few seconds later the monitor "sleep mode" comes up yet my computer is still running and i have to force shut it down. Often when this happens i will turn it back on and it will run for a random amount of time before it does it again. i have a suspicion that it's my windows as i have had many problems with my windows in the past and am going to re-install it this weekend. my other suspicion in the ram because a quick fix to almost any problems i get with my pc is fixed by changing the two ram sticks to the other two dimms.

If anyone could help or give suggestions i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, Jake

if memtest doesnt throw up anything you will spend anywhere from hours to months trying to fix this sort of problem, you have 3 options 1) live with it 2) format your C: drive and reinstall windows and hopefully it will go away or 3) buy a new PC

Ok mem test posted clear of errors after running 1 pass on one stick and 2 passes on the other (all i had time for) and i am in the process of doing some backups to re-install windows, i'm pretty sure now windows is causing the problem and i hope re-installing fixes it because i want to get rid of this pc as soon as it's stable to provide money for a new build i have in mind. If only my backup drive was usb 3.0 these speeds are painful :p

So far so good. re-installed windows and haven't had any problems yet, even tried forcing a blue screen the way it used to but still holding up.
I'll post back if further problems occur
