I can't put more than 1Gb RAM

When going through msconfig, BOOT.INI advanced, the /MAXMEM isn't checked, but when I check it I can't go over 896 Mb?? The annoying thing is that I ordered two 1 Gb sticks of ram.
Anyone know how to get past this limitation?
