Okay, so, I got myself a Sabertooth 990fx a few years ago.
Everything ran smoothly until I decided I wanted to plug in my audio system.

Specs:
Sabertooth 990fx
1000w PSU
4x AMD Phenom II CPU
2x 8GB 1600mHz and 2x 2GB 1600mHz RAM
2x 2TB HDD 1x 1.5TB HDD and 1x 300GB HDD
1x AMD Radeon HD 6800-series GPU

The issue lies with the built in soundcard as far as I know, what happens is that when I try to use any speakers with the ports the computer randomly freezes and the sound starts stuttering. The image continues on just fine but all input devices cease functioning.
I have looked through a lot of threads concerning Sabertooth 990fx's freezing but I have not found anything that is related to the soundcard.

In the meantime I'm using USB sound devices which are not causing the same issues.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, I am not all too keen on purchasing a stand-alone soundcard when I have ports already supporting 5.1 installed.

Do you still have warranty with the board? i believe ASUS offers 5 years warranty with their boards.

Have you tried plugging in and turning speakers on before starting PC? Might be sensitive to connection(sometimes when PC's get old, the slightest thing can set them off, occurred to me with HP's and Dell's around 4 or 5 years old; as well as power strips that were loaded to the limits, slight static can set them off).
-IF SO, have you also checked to see if the line or connection to the built in soundcard has any kind of damage(burns, cuts, wear&tear, capacitors blown, etc.), it might be something as simple as a cap being blown and things aren't working because not enough energy is passed through.

The built in sound is adequate enough to deliver good audio for gaming(not the best but enough). No need to buy sound card, nowadays it's only necessary if you're really in need to have perfect sound quality.

I've had issues before with boards doing similar things with other connectors. In my scenarios, they were defected pieces, not every piece is made perfectly.

I hope that helps, if you have any more information, it would help.

I've tried it on both Win7 and Win8, both retain the same issues. As for the UEFI and sound drivers, I am not sure. I did install the latest sound drivers just a few days ago, unfortunately the issue persisted.

I am not sure about the warranty, the hardware itself is quite new, I got it 3-4 years ago and I always keep my speakers connected and powered on. As far as I know, there is no visible damage to the board nor any of the connectors.
I do have a history of defect products, nearly all electronic equipment I purchase has been defect.

The sabertooth is two years old, I had to switch hardware when my last MB and GPU got ruined. So, to clarify, the sabertooth and the RadeonHD 6800 is two years old, the rest is four apart from the two 8gb RAM modules, they're half a year old.

The HDD's have been upgraded since, once a year.
