My main desktop is running Ubuntu and I also have a retina MBP as well as an ultrabook so I would need it to be compatible with Windows, mac, linux and iOS.
I need different permissions for different folders and there would be a maximum of 6 users at a time.
My server is sandy bridge i7 and would meet almost any min specs.
It will be used for:
- streaming video and audio
- accessing documents.
- remote access
- VPN
I am up to date with debian and ubuntu and I can use them fine but I am worried about compatibility with my raid card (which I still have to buy). I don't mind taking the time to set it up and configure it but I want to be able to maintain it relatively easily. If you need more info let me know.

You should try freeNAS. Its slightly different then Linux, as its BSD UNIX based, but its the most popular Home Server OS available
