I'm looking to add two 3TB HDD's and one 2TB HDD as storage attached to a 2 bay Synology DS212J NAS box. They will only be attached via the USB 2.0 connection. Each drive is prefilled with content, so I won't necessarily be transferring large amounts of data via USB 2.0. The 2TB drive is setup as a backup drive already. The new 3TB HDD's will be there just for storage, to be accessed randomly. These 3TB HDD's are WD Green's taken from individual, fan less external cases.

I actually don't know what you're asking. You're looking to add 3HDD into a 2HDD bay storage NAS which... doesn't make sense to me.

Okay, I can see where my question doesn't make sense outside of my own thoughts. I would like to add a 4 bay external enclosure to my NAS box. This will be something that will plug into one of the USB ports on the back of the NAS box to add additional storage capabilities. Sorry for the confusion.

I think you'e problem is going to be in finding a 2 bay hdd enclosure that supports 3tb drives and let you access them individually. Housing the sole 2tb shouldn't be a problem.

I think you might be better off just getting a dual bay esata box for the two 3tb drives and plug in the 2tb via usb. I know theres an icy dock esata that works well but it doesnt support 3tb drives.

Check with Synology id the 212j will take the dx510 expansion box.

My idea was to run one 4 Bay enclosure, but after looking more into it, I think your option of running the two 3TB drives in a 2 bay enclosure and leaving the other one in its original case might be the better option. Now I just need to decide on an enclosure that will accept 3TB drives.
