Random computer crash, CPU damage? No POST

Last night (i was out) someone in my house was using the rig, when all of a sudden the screen (using a tv) goes black and shows the 'no input' pop up, the computer is stuck on and the only way to turn it off was at the wall, the HDMI (both ends) was unplugged and everything turned off and left.

This morning, when i'm back I plug everything in again and it boots and runs fine. I look in the event manager, and see that a critical loss of power was logged, I presume from the force shutdown they had to use. The rig was up for a few hours today and I had no problems playing games like normal, no high temps or anything like that.

Now, the computer has done it again, except this time at boot up the cpu_led lights up and there is no POST or beeps. Power mainboard light goes green, All fans spin up fine and the DVD drive you can hear. If you try and turn it off with the case power button nothing happens, and i'm forced to use the switch on the psu.

I've tried a few things, including:
Booting with one ram stick in (far slot)
Turning EPU on
Taking the cpu out, no sign of burn out, although i'm not sure what i'm looking for there
Take the GPU out and in again ( the HDMI cable contacts the metal case, electrocuting me before, but is that a problem?)
Resetting the CMOS jumper pin things, not taken the battery out though.

This is really annoying as it's my first build and has been working fine for a few months, I can't see what would have changed to have this happen. What could be causing this and what can be done to fix it?

Specs are:
Fx8350 stock
Alpine64 cooler
2x8gb Vengeance LP
Msi HD7950
Asus M5A97 Evo R2
Ezcool 750watt psu (aware this needs replacing)
Win 7 HP 64

Couple of things to note, in the 8-pin EATX12v port I only have a 4 pin connector, but it's been working so far and the manual shows that setup.

Also, in the future is there software i can use to check if my system is stable? Overall it just doesn't have that sold feeling of a shop brought pc.

Any help would greatly be appreciated as I have a descent knowledge of computers but this has me very stuck, many thanks

EDIT: plugged it in this morning after reseating CMOS, small pop and all red leds on board lit up, smell of burning from PSU, guessing this is my problem all along. Cheers all

You know I had also black outs I remember my graphics card was badly connected to the PSU and blackout when it felt like it. but also I read alot of people had blackouts on the 7XXX cards... on different forums. what are you usually doing when the blackout happens. me for example I have a faulty 5750 it crashes when its idle. to stop it I had to rewrite an AMD/ATI profile in windows so the card instead of 400mgz it was running at 600mgh also the memory clock. otherwise my LCD would go corrupt.

Checked all the connectors, on the Gfx, seem fine. It wasn't idleing at them time. cpu light is on still though, would i be right in thinking its a lack of power to the cpu?

with a 750W PSU I doubt it really.. the 8350 by its self should only take about 125W. if you had a chance to try out a diffrent PSU... maybe there is something wrong with the PSU it self.
