Hey guys my mother has asked me if there is any way to improve her inspiron 531 and knowing its age and lack of power i looked around my house for old parts and i came up with an old stock HP 500w power supple with a 12pin and 8pin connector and a Powercolour HD 5450.

I checked and the motherboard in the computer takes a 4 pin and a 12 pin would an adapter cable work with this and still be able to support the card.

You can use half of the 8 pins to power the cpu most likely, and the 12 pins work fine. It should be able to support the card because it draws power though the board, I have only seen it used with a 24 pin connector though.

You don't have to change your power supply, PowerColor Go! Green AX5450 (is this is the card) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... is uses only 19 watt http://www.hwcompare.com/11789/radeon-hd-5450-vs-radeon...
Just make sure to uninstall previous video drivers and disable on board video chip in Device Manager.
