how to transfer files from old computer to external hard drive

I have an old Compaq desktop that is not receiving power. I have tried replacing the power cord and all other troubleshooting tips I have found, but no progress. I recently received a new laptop as a gift. I have also purchased an external hard drive. I would like to get my files off of the hard drive of the Compaq and put them on my external drive. Is it possible to transfer the files off of the old internal hard drive to my new laptop or external hard drive?

  1. take the harddrive out of your old compaq, put it in some sort of external inclosure (use USB3.0). connect to your new laptop and boot from that drive. then copy and paste your files into your new external

  4. Your suggestion helped quite a bit. Thanks so much.
  5. Can take the old hard drive and just stick it in another computer (if you don't have one available, see if you can borrow one from a friend) then burn files to CD/DVD or copy to a flash drive - no need to go buying stuff..

it's useful to have at least one HDD dock though, you never know when another hard-drive might crap out, or when those SATA to USB adapters on that external might fail. I think everyone should have one harddrive dock
  7. or the dock might fail ;) I've got a couple of business clients that have them...it's nice to have, but rather than put out $25 or so for one, that may never even get used or even be needed, I'd lean towards spending it on a steak dinner or a few beers in peace and quiet (which I never seam to get ;)
