Are the components too old?

Hey so at a garage sale today I saw a gaming computer for 40 bucks. the seller told me it could run half life 2 at the lowest settings so i'm obviously going to have to update the cpu, gpu, power supply and ram, but as far as the mobo, hard drive, and sound card go, do you think I'll need to upgrade them too? I didn't get the computer but I'm sure that if I went back tomorrow it would still be there.

Solution
If the cpu needs replacing, you'll probably need a new motherboard to support it. Modern motherboards have good onboard sound, so you don't need the sound card at all. Before I can answer about the hard drive, I'd need to know brand, model, interface, and capacity.

$40 sounds like a steal, but it might be impossible to upgrade within economic reason: I had an old eMachines with a 3DFX Voodoo card that would play HL2 at medium specs. and there ain't anything left out there that that could be upgraded with at this point in time. Worth checking the components though. What the Heck, load up some older games and play them with that PC.

I guess my real question here is, do you think I'll be able to salvage anything off of it and save some money on computer components, or would it be better just to build a whole new computer from scratch?

Sorry, I didn't get back on the forum last night. Now, without knowing the brand of the computer and the parts inside (CPU type/model, ?video card and model, etc.) it not possible to answer your question accurately. But here's some food for thought: If that old PC is using an old Pentium 4 or D or AMD K6 or 7, an AGP graphics card, and either 100 or 133 SDRAM or DDR or even DDR2, then there is probably nothing in there that will work in a new PC build with new/current CPU's etc. except MAYBE the fans or a SATA hdd.
Chexmixx23, don't forget to choose a 'best answer' before you stop following this thread; that helps everyone know that input is no longer needed.
