Keyboard not always being recognised on start-up

Hi,

I'm not sure what is going on with my computer. This morning I found my keyboard wouldn't respond to the log in screen. I tried unplugging and plugging the keyboard. It seemed to have an effect in that pressing the backspace button did result in something being entered as the dots/blobs appeared in the box.

My mouse was working fine, so I restarted, and it worked, which made me wonder if it was just a glitch.

The next I started my computer the same thing, but this time I got another keyboard thinking it was the first keyboard...nope! So I plugged the first into different USB ports and got nothing.

I looked online via my kindle, and read about updating drivers, but I can't update drivers if I can't log in. I did find that I could interrupt the start and enter BIOS and my keyboard worked fine. Anyway, somehow, it started working after another restart and by unplugging and plugging in the keyboard.

So the first thing I do is update drivers via the internet, but am told my keyboard driver is up to date.

So I come here.

Obviously, I can't log in without a keyboard to type in passwords, so that is concern. Also, what could be causing this? The computer is about 9 months old, and I use it for work (word and excel), internet and recently all I've been playing is Civ 5 (modded) and Planetside 2.

Anything I need to know.

Thanks for reading.

I might not have been very clear:
"The next I started my computer the same thing, but this time I got another keyboard thinking it was the first keyboard...nope! So I plugged the first into different USB ports and got nothing."

I am using a USB keyboard, and tried a different keyboard, and it is not the keyboard.
I did try other USB ports (back of computer as opposed to front of computer) and that did nothing.

Right now, I am using the first keyboard and the first USB port, and it is working fine, but that doesn't mean to say the problem is rectified. The only way to find out is to restart the computer, whereupon I need a keyboard to enter the password to enter windows, which it wasn't doing. However, as above, it works in BIOS.
