Hi, I recently bought a titan for 3d rendering, and some gaming as well. Now the card is great for rendering, but in bf3 (even sp) the fps is horrible, and in Metro las light, the fps is great. I would have thought it would be the other way round... Are the games ram/CPU dependant. I have a core 2 quad at 3.2 ghz, and 4 gb ram ddr2. I will upgrade soon, but needed the card urgently.

Xeons are just for servers due to their high up times.
If you want to keep your PC turned on for next 6 months straight (And are able to pay for the electricity for that too), go for Xeons.
Not recommended here. You will not find a better CPU for that price range than i7 4770. It is the fastest 4th Generation i7 out there.

Yeah you are very right here mate.
Many games are CPU dependent (Not RAM, Just the CPU).
Metro Last Light is GPU dependent so you got good FPS but BF 3 relies more on CPU which is causing low FPS as your CPU is fairly weak and is causing bottlenecks (With a good CPU even Metro Last Light FPS would increase).
You have to buy at least i5 3570K or i5 4670K to keep up with a Titan along with 8 / 16 GB 1600 MHz RAM to make things even better.

OK thanks. Would an i7 3770/4770 be worth it? I am not interested in ocing (I only oc'ed my current chip because it was close to unusable in 3d modelling apps), so a k version would be useless. Which is better value (I need the hyperthreading)? Or is there an equivalently priced cpu that performs as well with editing/modelling (possibly gaming)? This non k version would also allow me to buy cheaper motherboards, as I don't need the Ocing ability.

Since you are not going to overclock, Haswell is definitely much better than Ivy Bridge in all cases.
It gets you 10% performance improvement straight and uses lesser power to operate too (Has lower TDP).
You should get i7 4770 in this case as there is no other CPU from AMD which would get you as good per core performance as Intel.

Yeah the difference is noticeable in 3D applications and rendering especially.
You would see it for yourself.
It costs $250 from Microcenter and $310 (Approx.) from online websites.

lets not suggest a cpu that's made for what OP wants........... after all those xeons are the devils child.......... I don't leave my machine running 6 month's straight. I don't worry about the electrical bill. I don't worry about how cool it runs. I don't worry about how well it performs it's tasks. I don't worry about how well it plays games.......I don't worry that it was made to last...... all that would be stupid........

Anyways, we can just give suggestions and when a cheaper i7 can give same results why go for Xeon?
Its his choice solely of what he wants to buy. Xeons are not good CPUs when you consider price performance ratio. I know they are very strong but cost a lot too. OP can get an i7 3930X Extreme Edition for the cost of a good Xeon.
