In brief: I would like to replace bad files in bad sector from backup but need to identify which files are effected and don't know how.

Details:
TOSHIBA MQ01ABD075 ATA Device (laptop)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
699GB TOSHIBA MQ01ABD075 ATA Device (SATA) (less than a year old)

Computer frequently fails to boot - black screen. I attempted to use Clonezilla and Acronis to create an image before I mess with the HDD. Both failed Acronis just gave me an general IO error mesg. Clonezilla sited a bad sector. Don't know if Clonezilla recorded the files I need or not. At the end is reported images (3 partitions) were usable but that doesn't (?) necessarily mean the bad sector files were backup sucucessfully.

It seems to me that there must be some file(s) crucial to the OS in that sector. If I knew what they are I might be able to extract the needed files from my OEM OS installation disks, and have them available on the SD drive ready to copy to HDD using a Boot CD if running running fdisk with fix (or other program you might recomend) fails to recover the needed files.

thoughts and recommendations please.

You are right there are some of OS files in that bad sector so you can't do the either backup or cloning. But no one knows where they are.

All you do 1) go to official site to download the "Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1", and put into the DVD. 2) Do the startup repair in Windows 7 to fix that problem.

OK, looks like a relatively easy solution. I'm downloading the startup repair now. Will post how it goes. Thanks for the quick reply!
